The Swift Current Broncos clashed with the Moose Jaw Warriors in a battle between East Division rivals and it was the Broncos that provided all the energy from the gate, plowing their way to a 6-1 victory on Tuesday night for their fourth straight win.

Team captain Glenn Gawdin provided the initial spark minutes into the game, making a great individual effort down the wing and finding the top corner to give Swift Current a 1-0 lead in front of 2,342 fans in the stands.

Aleksi Heponiemi potted in a rebound off a Max Lajoie wrist shot to double Swift Current’s lead to 2-0.

Tyler Steenbergen got in on the action by netting his 23rd of the campaign at the 7:42 mark of the opening frame. It was 3-0 Broncos with the shots on goal 13-4 in their favour early on, forcing the Warriors to call a timeout and regroup.

Steenbergen added his second of the night while the Broncos were on a 5-on-3 man advantage midway through the second period. The native of Sylvan Lake, AB had a rebound find his stick in front of the Warriors’ cage and he backhanded it home.

The 18-year-old scored his third consecutive goal to record the natural hat trick in the third period to give him a team-leading 25 goals and a commanding 5-0 cushion over Moose Jaw.

Brett Howden scored late for the Warriors to break the shutout bid, but Broncos goaltender Taz Burman was steady, registering 28 saves for his ninth win of the season.

Lane Pederson restored the Broncos’ five goal lead with his 16th marker in the final minutes of regulation to cap off the 6-1 win.

Shots on goal were 49-29 in favour of Swift Current. The Broncos also did not grant Moose Jaw a power play in this one while scoring once on four power play opportunities of their own.

The Broncos seek their season-high fifth straight win when they take on the Warriors again on Wednesday night at Mosaic Place. Puck drop is at 7:00pm CST.
