Broncos come up just short in loss to Warriors

It was Teddy Bear Toss night presented by Pattison Agriculture tonight in Swift Current as the boys in blue went up against the Moose Jaw Warriors to close out the second game of a back-to-back set.

The first period was a story the Broncos did not want to see occur as the Moose Jaw Warriors scored three times in a span of two minutes and fourteen seconds.

Tanner Jeannot received a stretch pass from Tristin Langan for a partial breakway and went five-hole on Broncos goaltender Logan Flodell, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Just 17 seconds later, Jayden Halbgewachs gobbled up a rebound and scored his 26th of the season and that was followed up by a marker from Luka Burzan tucking in another rebound opportunity. Flodell was pulled from the game and backup goaltender Joel Hofer entered in relief.

The second period was a complete topsy turvy as the Broncos sure took advantage of their power play opportunities. Jeannot was infracted for four minutes in penalties after a high sticking double minor, leading to Tyler Steenbergen depositing his WHL-leading 35th goal of the season. Teddy bears flooded the ice as fans tossed teddies, toques and mitts that were collected and donated to the Salvation Army of Swift Current.

When play resumed, Swift Current netted another goal on the man advantage as Glenn Gawdin backhanded home his 23rd of the season from in close to narrow the gap at 3-2.

The Broncos saw their fair share of chances in the third period, outshooting Moose Jaw 10-6 in the final 20 minutes but the tying goal wasn’t in the works and they fell by a final score of 3-2 in regulation.

Hofer amassed 19 saves in relief while Adam Evanoff backstopped 28 shots for the Warriors.

Special teams were terrific for the Broncos as they executed twice on five power play chances while holding Moose Jaw scoreless on six man advantages.

Next up for the Swift Current Broncos is a date with another East Division opponent, that being the Prince Albert Raiders on Tuesday, December 5th at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex. Puck drop is at 7pm CT.
