Broncos Fall to Wheat Kings in Shootout

28-Sep-12

The Swift Current Broncos suffered a 5-4 shootout loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings Friday night at the Credit Union iPlex.

A shorthanded marker by Ryley Miller and a power play goal by Nick Buonassisi by the midway mark of the first frame would give the Wheat Kings an early two-goal lead.  Around the 15-minute mark of the first period, New Jersey Devils prospect Graham Black would put the Broncos on the board with his second of the season and make it 2-1.  But, just under a minute later Ryan Pulock would restore the Wheat Kings lead with his second of the year to make it 3-1 after 20 minutes of play.

Early into the second period, Chance Lund would follow through off of a feed from Levi Bews to make it a one goal game.  A power play for the Broncos seconds later would see defenceman Dalton Reum capitalize tallying his first of the season and locking the contest up at three.

Near the four-minute mark of the final frame Bews would round up a power play marker of his own to give the Broncos their first lead of the evening.  But, the Wheat Kings would retaliate once again and tie the game up at four on Buonassisi's second of the evening.  The game would remain 4-4 for the remainder of regulation as the Broncos would head to their third overtime of the season.

The Broncos would outshoot the Wheat Kings 9-0 in the additional frame, but wouldn't be able to score the much needed game winning goal as time would run out and a shootout would commence.

Both netminders would stand strong for almost four rounds (with the Broncos sending out the likes of Coda Gordon, Adam Lowry, Black and Ryon Moser), but in the fourth round Brandon's Eric Roy would score the game winner resulting in a 5-4 shootout loss.

The Broncos outshot the Wheat Kings 41-30 and went 2 for 6 on the man advantage.
