The Swift Current Broncos continued their steady play in the 2016 WHL pre-season as they outdueled the Prince Albert Raiders 4-2 on Saturday night at the Credit Union I-Plex.

Kaden Elder opened the scoring on a Broncos man advantage as he took a cross-ice pass from Tyler Steenbergen and one=timed it by the blocker side of Raiders’ netminder Ian Scott to give Swift Current a 1-0 lead.

At the 15:35 mark of the period, Tim Vanstone scored for the Raiders to tie the game at 1-1 but Steenbergen replied with a power play marker to make the lead 2-1. The lead didn’t last long as Loch Morrison netted his first of the pre-season just 20 seconds later to once again tie the game.

The game remained a physical battle with both clubs trading chances and with the game still knotted at two goals apiece in the third period, Broncos’ Tanner Mole and Raiders’ Dylan Williamson got in a spirited scrap that landed both players five minute majors for fighting.

Broncos forward Calvin Spencer ripped a shot glove high to give the Broncos a 3-2 lead midway through the third period. The goal was assisted by import forward Aleksi Heponiemi which marked his third helper of the game to give him a WHL-leading 15 points (5g-10a).

Artyom Minulin floated in an empty netter with a couple minutes left in the third period to secure the Broncos 4-2 win.

The Broncos defence was stingy in this contest, giving up only 15 shots against while recording 20 on goal.

Swift Current will wrap up the pre-season with a match-up on the road against the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday night before opening up their 50th season on home ice vs. the Saskatoon Blades on Friday, September 23.
