Broncos Power Play Goes to Work, Edge Oil Kings 3-2
The Swift Current Broncos started off their three-game Alberta swing on a positive note, netting three power play goals to edge the Edmonton Oil Kings 3-2 on Wednesday night at Rogers Place.
Both clubs played to a scoreless first period as both goaltenders held the fort. Broncos netminder Jordan Papirny made eight saves while Oil Kings goaltender Patrick Dea stopped all 15 shots he faced.
The Broncos would crack through as Kaden Elder buried a rebound chance to give his club a 1-0 lead midway through the second period. Tempers flared midway through the frame as multiple fights broke out and Oil Kings defenceman Will Warm took an unnecessary boarding penalty that resulted in a five minute major.
Edmonton would score seconds later as Conner McDonald scored his fourth of the season to tie it 1-1.
However, Swift Current took advantage in the last minute of that five minute power play as Aleksi Heponiemi completed a cross ice pass to set up Tyler Steenbergen for his 40th goal of the season.
Artyom Baltruk beat Papirny glove-high 59 seconds into the third period to knot the score up at 2-2. Baltruk’s goal came on the power play with Nicholas Bowman and Riley Stadel collected the assists.
Moments later, Aleksi Heponiemi ripped in the go-ahead goal on a Broncos power play to restore their one goal lead at 3-2 and it was enough as the Broncos won their third straight game overall. Papirny was solid in the Bronco cage, backstopping 23 shots.
Swift Current finished the night 3/7 on the power play while Edmonton went 2/6. Shots on goal were 29-25 in favour of Swift Current.
The Broncos road swing continues on Friday night when they clash with the Red Deer Rebels at the ENMAX Centrium. Puck drop is set for 8:00pm CT.
