The Swift Current Broncos continued their four-game home stand with a date against the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday night and they took care of business, topping the Raiders by a score of 5-2.
A mad scramble in front of the Broncos cage led to a Raiders goal from Kolten Olynek, giving the visitors a 1-0 edge midway through the first period.
The Broncos responded as Calvin Spencer scored to tie it at 1-1. Then it was Arthur Miller redirecting in his fifth goal of the year to push the Broncos ahead 2-1 to close out the opening frame.
The second period saw the home club dominate in the Raiders end of the ice, outshooting them 16-7 along the way but Raiders’ goaltender Ian Scott rose to the challenge in backstopping all 16 of those shots. It was still a 2-1 game heading through 40 minutes of play.
Ryan Graham provided much needed insurance 1:24 into the third period, sniping a dandy on a partial breakaway to extend Swift Current’s lead to 3-1.
Prince Albert would not go away as forward Simon Stransky registered his 13th goal of the season on a Raiders power play chance to cut the score to 3-2.
Later on, the Broncos got a beautiful goal from Tyler Steenbergen as he made a spin move from the corner deep in Prince Albert territory to escape trouble, cut to the net and slid home his 30th goal of the season.
It was a 4-2 game and it remained that way until three minutes and change to go in regulation when Prince Albert pulled Scott to go six-on-five with the extra attacker. The Broncos took advantage of the situation as Aleksi Heponiemi collected his 12th marker to put the game out of reach.
Swift Current outshot Prince Albert 38-26 and are now a perfect 6-0 against the Raiders this season. Prince Albert went 1/3 on the power play while the Broncos did not score a power play marker in four opportunities.
The Broncos conclude their four-game home stand on Wednesday, January 11th against the Kootenay ICE at the Credit Union i-Plex. Puck drop is at 7:00pm CT.
