Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League announced today that Swift Current Broncos forward Tyler Steenbergen has been named the WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending October 2, 2017.
Selected by the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes (5-128) at the 2017 NHL Draft, the 19-year-old Steenbergen recorded nine points (6G-3A) in a pair of wins for the Broncos this past week. Victories over the Regina Pats and Brandon Wheat Kings kept the Broncos a perfect 3-0-0-0 on the season.
Wednesday, Steenbergen led the Broncos to a victory over the 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup host Pats on the road, scoring two goals and four points in a 5-3 win. Steenbergen factored into the Broncos’ first three goals, scoring the team’s third goal on the power play and picking up the insurance goal late in the third.
Friday, Steenbergen picked up five points (4G-1A), leading his Broncos to a 7-2 victory over the Wheat Kings. Scoring three of his goals at even strength, Steenbergen notched the game-winning goal and assisted on the insurance goal.
As of October 2, Steenbergen sits tied atop the WHL scoring charts with 11 points (6G-5A) in three games. He also owns a share of the WHL goal-scoring lead with six markers to date. His rating of plus-8 is also good enough for a share of top spot in the WHL.
Steenbergen, a product of Sylvan Lake, Alta., set career highs during the 2016-17 season with 90 points (51G-39A) in 72 games before being selected by the Coyotes. In 214 WHL regular season games, Steenbergen has totalled 158 points (82G-76A).
The 5-foot-10, 182-pound center was originally selected in the first round (12th) of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft by the Broncos.
The Broncos are on the road again Friday, October 6 (7:05 p.m. MT) at the SaskTel Centre to face the Saskatoon Blades before hosting the Kootenay ICE in their home opener Saturday, October 7 (7 p.m. MT) at the Credit Union I-Plex.
