The Swift Current Broncos rang in the New Year with an exciting performance against the Saskatoon Blades on Sunday afternoon at the SaskTel Centre. Team captain Glenn Gawdin notched a natural hat trick while Artyom Minulin scored the game winner as the Broncos beat the Blades 5-4 in overtime.
Gawdin led the charge for the Broncos offence, roofing a pair of goals 57 seconds apart to make it a 2-0 lead early on. Swift Current dominated the opening frame and outshot Saskatoon 12-8.
Braylon Shmyr got the Blades on the board 2:14 into the second period as he backhanded in a low shot by the pad of Broncos netminder Travis Child to cut the score to 2-1. Caleb Fantillo then tied it up, burying a rebound opportunity to knot it up 2-2.
Moments later, Gawdin put his team on his shoulders and buried his third goal of the day to complete the natural hat trick and put the Broncos back up 3-2. Tyler Steenbergen completed a backdoor play to find an open Gawdin in front of the Blades cage.
In the third period, Broncos forward Conner Chaulk received a pass from Arthur Miller on a 3-on-2 rush and waited patiently, roofing his fourth of the season when Blades goaltender Logan Flodell went down.
Saskatoon refused to quit as Shmyr scored his second marker of the day to make it a 4-3 game with 14 minutes remaining in regulation.
Blades forward Jesse Shynkaruk tied the game 4-4 with a one-timer that deflected off the Bronco defender and by the glove hand of Child late in the period.
In overtime, the Broncos penalty kill was clutch in successfully killing off a 4-on-3 Blades power play and shortly afterwards, Artyom Minulin redirected a Lane Pederson pass over Flodell to seal the 5-4 overtime win. Travis Child turned aside 38 shots in the win.
The Broncos were outshot 42-31 in the contest. Saskatoon went 1/3 on the power play while Swift Current finished 0/3.
The boys return to the ice on Tuesday, January 3rd against the Lethbridge Hurricanes, beginning their season-long four-game home stand.
