Broncos Win Third in a Row Heading into Mid-Season Break
The Swift Current Broncos wrapped up their first half of the 2016-17 WHL regular season by collecting their third straight win, beating the Prince Albert Raiders by a score of 4-3 on Saturday night at the Art Hauser Centre.
Loch Morrison blasted a long slap shot by Broncos netminder Travis Child to give the Raiders an early 1-0 lead that was then followed by a power play goal from blue liner Max Martin to put Swift Current in a 2-0 hole. Taz Burman entered the game in relief of Child after the Raiders second goal.
At he 15:06 mark, Broncos’ winger Arthur Miller made a nice pass to find Kole Gable in the high slot and he wired a high wrist shot blocker-side to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Broncos continued to be patient and create plays when the opportunities presented themselves. Ottawa Senators prospect Max Lajoie showed patience in the Raiders end by swiftly moving along the blue line, cutting towards the middle and made a stick to stick pass to Aleksi Heponiemi who scored the tying goal. For the Finnish forward, the goal marked his fourth in as many games.
Gable buried his second goal of the night to put the Broncos up 3-2 in the second period as he picked up a rebound off a long Brandan Arnold wrist shot and tucked it in. Shots on goal were 28-10 in favour of Swift Current through 40 minutes.
The Raiders got the Broncos on their heels in the third period and were rewarded when Austin Glover’s shot bounced off the glove hand of Taz Burman and into the back of the net.
It was a 3-3 game late but Kade Jensen deposited his third goal of the season with a hard slap shot that found its way through traffic. The goal came at the 16:22 mark and stood as the game winner.
Taz Burman made 16 saves in the win while the Raider’s Ian Scott turned aside 31 shots.
Shots on goal were 35-21 in favour of Swift Current. Prince Albert scored on their lone power play chance while Swift Current finished 0/3.
Swift Current enters the mid-season break with three straight wins and also own a perfect 5-0-0-0 record against Prince Albert this season. They will open the second half of the season with Crescent Point Minor Hockey Night on home ice against the Moose Jaw Warriors on December 27th at 7:00pm CST.
