Flodell hot between the pipes, Broncos shutout Hurricanes
Steven Mah/Southwest Booster

On a day where we remember those who have served and fallen, to honour and remember their achievements for giving us freedom on this Remembrance Day, the Swift Current Broncos certainly provided a night that will live in the memories of the 2,480 fans in attendance. The Broncos made it difficult for their opponent all night long as they demolished the Lethbridge Hurricanes 6-0 on Saturday night.

Before fans were all seated in the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex, Aleksi Heponiemi had the crowd on their feet very quick as he scored 12 seconds into the game.

The Broncos then took advantage of a five-on-three power play opportunity late in the first period. Sneaking in from the point, Tyler Steenbergen committed a perfect wrister to beat Canes netminder Reece Klassen and give Swift Current a 2-0 lead.

22 seconds later, the captain Glenn Gawdin received a perfect pass from Heponiemi to land himself a breakaway and he smoothly lifted one by Klassen to increase the Broncos lead to 3-0.

Gawdin then smacked home a rebound opportunity on another Broncos power play 4:12 into the second period to give Swift Current a commanding 4-0 cushion.

Kaden Elder joined the party at the 1:18 mark of the final period as his backhander coming down the left wing snuck through Klassen’s equipment and it was 5-0.

The goals kept coming as Steenbergen then buried his WHL-leading 26th goal of the year after an impressive passing play in Lethbridge territory that saw Sahvan Khaira and Heponiemi register assists.

20-year old goaltender Logan Flodell was hot between the pipes as the Canes fired 20 shots on goal in the third period alone but the Regina, SK native was up to the task and completed his mission of collecting his third shutout of the season.

Shots on goal were 36-24 in favour of Lethbridge. The Broncos top ranked power play was electric again, going 3/4 on the night while holding the Hurricanes scoreless on three man advantages.

Next up for Swift Current is a battle amongst top teams in the WHL’s East Division as they are set to host the Moose Jaw Warriors on Tuesday, November 14th at 7:00pm.
