Home cooking continues as Broncos triumph Wheat Kings
2018 has been incredible for the Swift Current Broncos as they collected their ninth straight win on home ice to remain perfect at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex since the calendar switched over to the new year. Glenn Gawdin and Tyler Steenbergen led the charge with three points each (1g-2a) along with plus-3 ratings in a 4-2 win against the Brandon Wheat Kings.
New Jersey Devils prospect Colby Sissons resumed his steady season on the score sheet, scoring on a terrific looking wrist shot from the right wing to pick the top far corner and give the Broncos a 1-0 lead. Swift Current piled on 21 shots in the first period but the goal from Sissons was the lone one to report from both teams.
Wheat Kings forward Ty Lewis tied the game up midway through the second period as he followed up his own rebound from in close and just got the puck around the outstretched pad of Broncos goaltender Stuart Skinner.
Swift Current got it back as defenceman Josh Anderson completed a smooth long pass to Kole Gable who was stationed at the right faceoff dot in Wheat Kings territory, setting up Gable’s sixth goal of the campaign.
Brandon tied it up as Rylan Bettens scored off a routine rush into Broncos territory to knot the game up at two goals apiece through 40 minutes of action.
Tyler Steenbergen netted the eventual game winner at the 11:06 mark in the third period to notch goal number 40 for the Sylvan Lake, AB product.
Broncos captain Glenn Gawdin eliminated any chance of a Brandon comeback attempt, depositing his 49th of the season with the Wheat Kings net empty late in the game.
Shots on goal were 33 apiece. Both clubs combined to go scoreless on the power play with Swift Current going 0/3 and Brandon wrapping up 0/2.
Swift Current will host the Central Division leading Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday, February 16th here at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex in the first half of a back-to-back set. Puck drop is at 7:00pm CT.
