Joel Sexsmith Selected Ninth Overall by Broncos in 2017 WHL Bantam Draft

Swift Current, SK: The Swift Current Broncos used their first of two first round picks in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft to select defenceman Joel Sexsmith on Wednesday morning in Calgary, AB.

“We think of Joel as a potential first pairing defenceman,” said Director of Hockey Operations Jamie Porter. “He is a very good skater, great vision, good hockey sense and he displays very high character.”

A product of Edmonton, AB, Sexsmith played for the Rink Hockey Academy Bantam Prep for the Canadian Sport School Hockey League. The 6′, 159 lb blue liner amassed 16 points (4g-12a) and 20 penalty minutes in 30 regular season games to go along with one assist in one playoff contest. Sexsmith also took part in the 2017 Alberta Cup, suiting up for Team Edmonton Blue in which he notched three assists in five games.

“It was pretty surreal,” said Sexsmith once learning he was selected by Swift Current. “It was definitely something I’ve dreamed of since I was a young kid. I grew up watching guys play in the WHL and it didn’t really sink in until I heard my name called at the draft. It’s a pretty special thing.”
