Make it Eight Straight, Broncos blank Giants
Take it anyway they can get them, even on Friday the 13th! The Swift Current Broncos still remain as the only undefeated team in the Western Hockey League and throughout the entire Canadian Hockey League for that matter after blanking the Vancouver Giants 1-0 on Friday night.
Vancouver gave Swift Current a real test in the first period as they pumped 17 shots on goal but Broncos goaltender Logan Flodell was laser focused in backstopping every Giants shot sent his way.
Tyler Steenbergen broke the scoreless tie at the 11:54 mark of the second period, going coast to coast before scoring his WHL-high 16th goal of the year. Defencemen Colby Sissons and Sahvan Khaira earned assists on the goal.
The score remained 1-0 Swift Current well into the final couple minutes of regulation. Vancouver pulled their goaltender David Tendeck for the extra attacker and placed a lot of physical pressure on the home team that included several scoring chances.
Swift Current was up to the task as the boys matched Vancouver’s physical style with extra physical efforts of their own to help lockdown the 1-0 victory.
Flodell was named the game’s first star after turning aside all 38 Vancouver shots and gathering his first shutout as a Bronco.
Shots on goal were 38-31 in favour of Vancouver. The Broncos went 0/3 on the power play while the Giants went scoreless on their lone power play opportunity.
The Broncos are now sitting with an 8-0-0-0 record and are in first place in the WHL’s overall standings. There is no time to celebrate as the Broncos are back at it on Saturday, October 14th when they host the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm.
