For the sixth time in seven games, the Swift Current Broncos played beyond 60 minutes and were victorious as Artyom Minulin buried the overtime winner to send the Broncos to a 3-2 win against the Red Deer Rebels on Tuesday night.
Tyler Steenbergen scored his team-leading 15th goal of the season on a Broncos’ power play 8:22 into the opening frame to make it 1-0 Swift Current. Steenbergen pounced on a rebound from an Aleksi Heponiemi shot and made no mistake.
Broncos forward Cole Johnson added to the lead by netting his second of the season by Rebels goaltender Lasse Petersen to double up the score to 2-0 early in the middle frame.
Josh Mahura blasted one from the point to get Red Deer on the board with a 2-1 score late in the period.
In the third period, the Rebels found themselves on a two-on-one rush while shorthanded and Michael Spacek came down the wing, kept the puck and roofed it by Broncos netminder Taz Burman to knot the game at two goals apiece.
Overtime was required and Artyom Minulin played the role of hero in this one. Teammate Colby Sissons located Minulin at the point who wired a wrist shot off the post and in to seal the 3-2 win for Swift Current.
Swift Current outshot Red Deer in this one by a 30-25 margin and went 1/4 on the power play while Red Deer scored on their single man advantage.
The Swift Current Broncos return to action on Friday, November 18th as the East Division rival Moose Jaw Warriors make their way to town. Puck drop is at 7:00pm.
