Swift Current and Moose Jaw met for a pivotal Game 5 of their Round Two matchup on Friday night at Mosaic Placeand it was a contest that saw plenty of action back and forth but the Broncos skated away with a clutch 2-0 shutout victory to grab a 3-2 series lead in their Round Two matchup.
Kaden Elder scored the game’s first goal when he completed an exceptional redirection of a Josh Anderson point shot from about ten feet out in front of the Warriors crease.
Broncos defenceman Colby Sissons received a four-minute double minor for high-sticking but goaltender Stuart Skinner and the Swift Current penalty kill were up for the challenge, killing off the double minor as part of a perfect 3/3 frame killing penalies.
Skinner stopped all 14 Moose Jaw shots to highlight a back and forth first period.
Penalty troubles continued for Swift Current in the second period as 19-year-old forward Andrew Fyten got two minutes for checking from behind to put the Broncos shorthanded for the fourth time. Backed up by consistent goaltending, the Broncos held off the Warriors dynamic power play unit.
The Broncos were nursing their lead in the third period and were sound defensively as they played a conservative period and limited the Warriors’ chances.
They would get that huge insurance marker when Giorgio Estephan sniped his third of the postseason at the 9:56 mark, nearly halfway through the frame. Arizona Coyotes prospect Tyler Steenbergen streaked down the wing and made a nice centering pass to the 20-year-old Estephan who buried it from the low slot.
Skinner was incredible the rest of the way as he turned aside 36 shots to earn his third shutout of the WHL playoffs and second consecutive shutout away from home in a 2-0 Broncos win.
Shots on goal were 36-24 in favour of Moose Jaw. Swift Current went scoreless on their one power play try while Moose Jaw finished 0/4.
