Steenbergen scores four goals again, Broncos stay perfect
The Swift Current Broncos made the trip up north to take on their East Division rival, the Saskatoon Blades for the second time this season and seeked their fourth straight win to start the season. A natural hat trick from Tyler Steenbergen helped the winning ways continue as the Broncos routed the Blades by a 6-2 score on Friday night at the SaskTel Centre.
Glenn Gawdin opened the scoring on a Broncos power play chance early in the game. The captain deflected in the first marker of the game from perfect positioning in front of the Blades goal, redirecting home a point shot by Artyom Minulin.
Kaden Elder’s backhand attempt from the left faceoff dot in Blades territory snuck through the equipment of Joel Grzybowski to increase the lead to 2-0 at the 10:13 mark.
The second period was all about Steenbergen and that top line consisting of Glenn Gawdin and Aleksi Heponiemi went to work. Steenbergen snapped in his seventh of the season after a nice passing play by Heponiemi from behind the net to Gawdin who touched pass to Steenbergen for the goal.
The 19-year-old forward wasn’t finished yet, burying the Broncos fourth goal and fifth goal on similar plays with Gawdin earning an assist on one while Heponiemi got a helper on the other.
In the third period, Braylon Shmyr tipped in the Blades first goal at the 5:20 mark to break Logan Flodell’s shutout bid.
Steenbergen then scored an absolute dandy to record his fourth goal of the game, giving the Broncos a 6-1 lead. The Sylvan Lake, AB product has 10 goals in his past three games, including an impressive back-to-back four goal outings.
Flodell was effective in his first game against his former club, turning aside 19 shots in the win while blue liner Colby Sissons tallied two assists to go along with a strong plus-5 rating.
Shots on goal were 24-21 in favour of Swift Current. The Broncos went 1/5 on the power play while the penalty kill play was solid in holding Saskatoon scoreless on two tries.
Swift Current wrapped up their four game season opening road trip with a perfect 4-0-0 record. The club will finally play their home opener on Saturday night against the Kootenay ICE at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm.
