Swift Current, SK – The Swift Current Broncos shook the WHL world on Saturday afternoon as they completed a mega deal with the Central Division’s Calgary Hitmen.

The Broncos examined their need for secondary scoring and addressed it, acquiring forwards Beck Malenstyn and Matteo Gennaro along with a fifth round selection (2018) in the WHL Bantam Draft. Going the other way, Swift Current sends defenceman Dom Schmiemann, forwards Riley Stotts and Conner Chaulk along with prospects Ethan Hein, the rights to Josh Prokop and a second round pick (2018) in the WHL Bantam Draft.

A product of St. Albert, AB, Gennaro joins the Broncos with plenty of WHL experience and is expected to contribute right away on both ends of the ice. The 20-year-old has posted 25 points (14g-11a) in 22 games with the Hitmen, including seven power play goals and two shorthanded markers.

Malenstyn, a 19-year-old native of Delta, BC has recorded three assists in four games for the Hitmen this season and has missed time due to injury but is expected back in the lineup shortly. For his career, Malenstyn has suited up in 200 WHL contests and has amassed 99 points (48g-51a) to go along with 136 penalty minutes and five game-winning-goals.

“We feel we really added to our hockey club and this trade is a good fit for both teams,” said Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Manny Viveiros. “Gennaro and Malenstyn are established players and we are excited about getting these kids here.”

Stotts skated in 22 games for the Broncos this season, tallying three points (2g-1a) and 12 penalty minutes. For his career, the 2015 first round pick collected 19 points (11g-8a) in 74 games over two seasons with Swift Current.

Chaulk, a 20-year-old product of Regina, SK had spent his entire three-year career in Swift Current up to this point. He enjoyed a productive start to the season, notching 11 points (6g-5a) and a plus-2 mark in 21 games. The 6’1, 194 lb centreman registered 38 career points (17g-21a) in 141 games as a Bronco.

Schmiemann appeared in 21 games this season on the Broncos blue line, having notched three assists and a plus-1 rating. A product of James River Bridge, AB, the 6’4, 188lb defenceman was a first round selection by Swift Current in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft and played 93 career games as a Bronco.

Viveiros stated that trades are always tough but wishes the players all the best in the next chapter of their careers.

“We are thankful for their time here in Swift Current,” mentioned Viveiros. “These guys were tremendous in our locker room and will certainly be missed, but this was a deal that we had to do.”

Prospect goaltender Ethan Hein was drafted by Swift Current in the third round, 57th overall, in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. The Saskatoon, SK product made one appearance for the Broncos during the 2017 pre-season.

Prospect forward Josh Prokop was originally drafted by the Broncos in the fifth round, 92nd overall in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. The 5’8, 154 lb forward currently has 16 points (10g-6a) in 28 games with the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL.

The Swift Current Broncos are in action Saturday night, welcoming the Brandon Wheat Kings at the Innovation Credit Union for Multicultural Night at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex. Puck drop is at 7:00pm CT.
