The Swift Current Broncos were excited to announce that Vanessa Hettinger from Quantum Speed High Performance has been working with the Broncos players in developing and innovating on-ice skating techniques. Hettinger hit the ice with the players this week to lead new innovative drills and overall development techniques to enhance the players skill set on the ice.

Broncos’ Communications staff Brad Trojan and Ryan Switzer spoke with Hettinger regarding her career, background and work with the Swift Current Broncos.

“We started this business 16 years ago called Quantum Speed and it’s based on skating technique, power and speed,” said Hettinger when speaking with Broncos media. “Quantum means to see the smallest possible change with the biggest possible result. We’ve been working with bantam and junior hockey players for years, finding that small tweaks can be made in techniques and can result in immediate impact to a player’s skill set.”

Hettinger is currently General Manager & Master Instructor for Quantum Speed was inspired to start this business because she simply loves to help players and mentions that there wasn’t a market for it at the time. Now while working with the Broncos, Hettinger and the coaching staff have specific goals that they want to accomplish.

“Manny has made it clear that he wants his team to play a specific style of game,” Hettinger mentioned. “He wants to have a fast, explosive, transitional type of team and that’s what I was brought into help with. By the time I’ve taught them, they should have more tools in their tool kit to do what Manny’s asking them to do.”

The Edmonton, AB product has previously worked with the Edmonton Oil Kings and Tri-City Americans as well as working presently with Hockey Canada as a Master Skating Coach. Furthermore, she states that all players can benefit from the program in different ways over the short term and long term.

“I want them to feel something impactful right away, especially these guys as they’re so trained and athletic, if we’re able to give them one thing they can do right away, then they start to trust the process and realize that its not an overhaul and they don’t have to retrain everything they do. “Hettinger commented when referring to goals. “Long term, we love getting projects meaning from coaches we’ll work with players that are close but haven’t reached that next step yet. Four months for a teenage player or a pre AHL/NHL player, we can absolutely change what they do and so long term for me, one season can really make a change. Everybody has different learning styles.”

Broncos defenceman Colby Sissons has seen the benefits from working with Quantum Speed.

“Since the first seminar of technique week I have been improving, learning, and making connections all for the business of Colby Sissons, and, in doing that I give a huge thanks to Quantum Speed for all that they have done for me, and will continue to do for me down the road as it is a must for every off season and should be for you as well.”

Hettinger also mentioned that this program is not a cake walk and requires a lot of hard work to get the most out of it.

“It’s harder to go from good to great than it is to go from awful to good,” Hettinger mentioned when summarizing the dedication the program requires. “It’s getting that extra 10%, it can be really tough for these guys, especially for the ones that want to play at the next level. It’s a big compliment to work with the Broncos as it was the players that asked for the work, so I’m happy to help elevate their game.”

Swift Current hits the road this weekend to take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday, October 20th and the Kootenay ICE on Saturday, October 21st. Puck drop is slated for 7:00pm on both dates.
