Swift Current Broncos goaltender Isaac Poulter was terrific on Wednesday night as the Winnipeg. MB native delivered a 34 save performance but the Red Deer Rebels pulled away with a 3-2 win to deny the Broncos consecutive victories on home ice.

Carter Chorney scored the game’s first goal less than two minutes into the contest as the Sherwood Park, AB product had a quick release on a rebound opportunity and buried it by Rebels goalie Byron Fancy. Broncos blue liner Garrett Sambrook earned an assist after placing the initial shot on goal from the right point. Chorney now has goals in consecutive games.

When the Broncos Eric Houk landed in the penalty box for a holding minor, Dawson Barteaux tallied his fifth of the season midway through the Rebels power play to draw the score 1-1.

Moments after the Broncos penalty kill unit did a good job fending off a Rebels power play, Brandon Hagel gave Red Deer a 2-1 lead as he took a long saucer pass from Ryan Gottfried and one-timed it through Broncos goaltender Poulter.

Shots on goal were a fair margin for Red Deer through 40 minutes, 28-15 to be exact but the Broncos only trailed by one going to the third and final frame.

Swift Current received a power play chance when the Rebels’ Alexander Alexeyev was issued a two minute minor for boarding. The Broncos did not score on the man advantage but did pot the tying goal a few seconds afterwards as Finnish Import Joona Kiviniemi blasted home a one-timer pass that was set up by Connor Horning.

Rebels forward Zak Smith scored Red Deer’s third goal of the night at the 13:02 mark of the third period and it stood as the game winner as the Broncos were clipped 3-2.

Shots on goal were 37-23 in favour of Red Deer. The Broncos power play unit went 0/2 while the Rebels went 1/4 on the night.

The Broncos hit the ice this upcoming weekend for a pair of home games on Saturday, January 12th and Sunday, January 13th with the first of the pair being against the Seattle Thunderbirds. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm CT.
