Broncos complete comeback in shootout over Pats

Regina, SK – The Swift Current Broncos found themselves down 4-1 heading into the third period Saturday night in Regina, but scored three unanswered goals and completed the comeback with a shootout win over the Pats.

Austin Pratt opened the scoring just 2:36 into the game when he jumped on a loose puck in front of Isaac Poulter.

In the second, Dawson Holt sent a long wrist shot over the blocker of Poulter to extend the Pats lead. Duncan Pierce would add another goal just 11 seconds later to push the deficit to 3-0.

Joona Kiviniemi got the Broncos on the board, taking a breakaway pass from Caleb Wyrostok and slding a backhand shot through the five hole of Matthew Kieper.

Both teams would change goaltenders following the goal, as Jordan Fairlie took over for Swift Current and Dean McNabb came in for Regina.

Shortly after the goaltender change, Holt scored his second goal of the game, beating Fairlie with a shot along the ice on a partial break.

The Broncos went into the third period looking to put a shaky second behind them, as they were outshot 12-2 in the middle frame.

Early in the third, Josh Davies jumped on a loose puck in the crease for his fourth goal of the pre season just 1:45 into the period to cut into the Pats lead.

Just over a minute later, Ethan Regnier skated into the Pats zone and sent a long wrist shot under the glove of McNabb to make it a one-goal game.

The Broncos were the recipients of four straight power plays in the third period, and made good on the third one. Off the faceoff following Regnier’s shot hitting the post and deflecting out of play, Billy Sowa took a shot from the blue line that hit the post.

The rebound went right to Tyler Smithies who found the open net and tied the game with 4:08 left in regulation.

In overtime, both teams had quality chances with Hadyn Delorme’s penalty shot being the biggest. The puck rolled on him when he pulled it to his backhand and he couldn’t get a shot on goal.

In the shootout, Mathew Ward was able to sneak a shot through McNabb’s five hole, while Fairlie turned aside Sloan Stanick and Cale Sanders before Delorme hit the post to seal the Broncos win.

Swift Current is in action on Wednesday when they head to Irvine, Alberta for a neutral site game against the Medicine Hat Tigers.
