Davies’ hat trick leads Broncos to pre-season win

Swift Current, SK – The Swift Current Broncos started their pre-season schedule off on the right foot, thanks to a big performance from Josh Davies.

The 54th overall pick in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft scored a hat trick, including a power-play goal and shorthanded goal, to lead the way to an 8-5 Broncos win over Moose Jaw.

The game was played at the Brandt Centre in Regina, and just a minute into the game Davies took a breakaway pass and opened the scoring. Six minutes later he deflected in a one timer from Kasper Puutio on the power play to make it 2-0.

Mathew Ward, the first of the Broncos two picks in the first round, made it a 3-0 lead just 2:32 later. Fifty-five seconds after Ward’s goal, Carter Chorney jumped on the rebound of a Jake Kustra shot to make it 4-0.
Moose Jaw stopped the bleeding on a goal from Cameron Sterling just over a minute after Chorney’s goal. The game didn’t stay 4-1 for long, as Eric Houk found a loose puck in the crease to make it 5-1 two minutes later.

Eric Alarie and Bryden Kiesman scored for the Warriors to make it 5-3 after one period.

It took until the halfway mark of the second for another goal when Kustra’s long wrist shot from just inside the Warriors zone fooled Kyle Kelsey to make it 6-3. Ethan O’Rourke scored in the final minute of the period to make it 7-3 through 40 minutes.

In the third, and while shorthanded, Davies took a breakaway pass from Matthew Culling and slid the puck through the five hole of Kelsey on his backhand to complete the hat trick and put the Broncos up 8-3.

Carson Denomie and Cade Hayes would add goals for the Warriors to make the final score 8-5. Reid Dyck played the full 60 minutes in net for the Broncos, finishing with 25 saves.

The Broncos are back in action in Regina tomorrow as they’ll play the Pats at 7:00.
