Owen Pickering invited to Hockey Canada National Junior Team Summer Camp

Swift Current, Sask. – Swift Current Broncos defenceman Owen Pickering is among the 44 players invited to Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team summer camp, set for July 23 to 27 at the Markin MacPhail Centre at Winsport’s Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. The invitees include four goaltenders, 14 defenceman and 26 forwards.

Pickering, from St. Adolphe, Man., had a breakout season with the Broncos in 2021-22. Dressing for 62 of the Broncos 68 games, Pickering recorded 33 points (9-24-33) while logging heavy minutes for the Broncos in all situations.

Pickering was also named to the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game which was held in Kitchener, Ont., March 23.

Upon the conclusion of the regular season, Pickering joined Team Canada for the World U18 Hockey Championship in Germany. Recording two assists in four games and playing big minutes for Team Canada, Pickering was named one of Team Canada’s top three players at the tournament.

Beginning the season as a C-ranked prospect for the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, Pickering’s performance throughout the year saw him rocket up the rankings, ultimately finishing 15th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting. The 2022 NHL Entry Draft is set for July 7 and 8 in Montreal.

Pickering looks to become the first Bronco to suit up for Team Canada at the World Junior Championship since Tyler Steenbergen in 2018.

The 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship is set for December 26, 2022 to January 5, 2023 in Halifax, N.S. and Moncton, N.B.
