SWIFT CURRENT, SK – The Swift Current Broncos (10-48-2-3) had a strong stretch to end the first and begin the second period against the Red Deer Rebels (24-33-2-3) Wednesday night, but the Rebels had two separate three-goal outbursts in a 6-2 win.

After a back and forth opening few minutes, the Rebels opened the scoring. Mason Ward threw the puck at the net from the blue line and it popped out of Isaac Poulter’s glove to the slot for Jaxsen Wiebe to slide home the game’s opening goal.

Just 44 seconds later, Zak Smith tipped a point shot through Poulter’s five hole to extend the Rebels lead to 2-0. Dallon Melin capped off the three-goal outburst by the Rebels as they tallied the three goals in 5:09.

Sergei Alkhimov stopped the bleeding for the Broncos 37 seconds after the 3-0 goal. Kaleb Bulych’s point shot was tipped by Hayden Ostir and deflected to Alkhimov who had an open net to give the Broncos life.

Swift Current then went to the power play shortly after the goal, and had a brief 5-on-3 advantage, but couldn’t capitalize and went into the intermission trailing 3-1.

The Broncos continued the strong play to begin the second, and would cut the Rebels lead to just one. Ostir’s shot from the left circle somehow found it’s way past Byron Fancy to get the Broncos to within one.

That was as close as they would come, as the Rebels once again rattled off three goals in the span of 4:29, with two of them coming on the power play, to jump back ahead 6-2. Isaiah DiLaura replaced Poulter following the sixth goal, and turned aside all 13 shots he faced in relief.

The Broncos host the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday night for Junior Bronco Night, in which the Broncos will be wearing special jerseys that were designed a student from Wymark School. They will be up for auction in the lobby throughout the game.

Announced attendance was 1,988.
