SWIFT CURRENT, SK – The Swift Current Broncos (10-33-1-3) should have had a huge lead heading into the third against the Medicine Hat Tigers (32-14-1-1) Friday night, but the goal posts and Garin Bjorklund kept things tied through 40 before the Tigers pulled away with a 4-1 win.
The Broncos looked like they had some jump in the opening period as they had a handful of high-quality scoring chances, and would eventually jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Jaxan Kaluski stole the puck along the boards before skating down the slot and sending it to the net. Eric Houk was there to deflect it on goal before sliding home his rebound for his fifth of the year with 4:21 remaining.
Houk nearly scored his second of the game off a rebound in the slot, but the puck was rolling and he wasn’t able to get all of it as it sailed into the chest of a diving Garin Bjorklund.
The Broncos probably felt they deserved to have a hefty lead after the second period as they couldn’t seem to get a bounce.
Not only was D-Jay Jerome robbed on a breakaway, or Cole Nagy on a redirect in tight, but the Broncos also hit three posts over the course of the period.
The Tigers weathered the storm and eventually pulled even as Bryan Lockner beat Poulter under the glove off the rush to tie the game with 3:13 remaining.
Medicine Hat found their legs in the third period, holding the Broncos in their own zone for long stretches before taking a lead on a terrible bounce.
Off the rush on the left wing Ryan Chyzsowski tried to centre the puck, but it deflected off a Broncos stick and under the blocker arm of Isaac Poulter to give the Tigers the lead 9:52 into the third.
The Tigers added to their lead two minutes later when James Hamblin scored his 30th of the season on a screened shot to make it 3-1, before Parker Gavlas capped off the scoring four minutes later.
The Broncos welcome the Prince Albert Raiders tomorrow night.
Announced attendance was 1,972.
